I couldn't ever have imagined I would end up in the Republique Socialiste sur la Mer, aka, Santa Monica City. My first visit to SM ( off-hands dirty minds! ) was in 1981 when the shopping center was brand new and shopping centers were the way to go.
I came to Los Angeles to study for my master's in applied linguistics and teach English writing to foreign grad students. I met my husband, we moved out of South Central to ... Santa Monica. I left LAUSD and went to teach for Santa Monica-Malibu USD. Actually, I would like to address the issue regarding LAUSD and Los Angeles mayor Villaraigosa. That is another vatapá waiting to hit the fan.
Santa Monica is expensive to live in but great. I don't go to the beach, but I like to know it's there. it's diverse, more tolerant of various ethnicities, we've got fifteen movie theaters, stars abound but don't stare, please. Lots of organic products available in chi-chi markets, women chosing their veggies wearing their size twos, don't you hate that? Not me. What I love about my country is the disregard for fashion rules, come as you are, be yourself mentality.
We've got problemas; for now it's too early in the day. Twenty to seven in the morning. Seize the day!
